Wave All Your Fingers at Your Neighbor Day and Send a Card to a Friend Day

Today’s theme: Spreading love and making friends

First today is Wave All Your Fingers at Your Neighbor Day. Yes, there are a lot of neighbors out there who just are not likeable; my past neighbors played loud music, had people over at late night and had a rooster…I really hate roosters. But there are neighbors who can be good or you may not even really know that well. It is a good idea to try and make friends with your neighbor or neighbors. Imagine if you have to go away for a while but don’t want to leave your home unattended or you need a place to stay while you’re getting the house fumigated, being friends with the neighbor can prove good for you if you ever get into a sticky situation and need a friend. So try getting to know your neighbor or neighbors, there’s no reason not to do so. Or at least give them a friendly wave when you see them, and don't forget to smile.

And on a some-what related note, today is also Send a Card to a Friend Day. If you live far away from most of your friends or your old childhood friends moved away long ago, sending them a card is a fun way to stay connected. If you are too busy to type or write a letter, then cards are perfect for you. It’s says most of what you already want to say and you can add a little something personal to them like a drawing or a poem.

So focus on other people in your life and try connecting with them; it’s great to have friends.

Lame Duck Day

Quack quack quack…

That means today is Lame Duck Day. Now, what is a lame duck? Well, it could be an uncool duck but that’s not what it is exactly. When referring to a “Lame duck”, that is a person who is not very good at achieving goals and will likely be fired soon or a politician whose term is coming to a close end. If you know someone who is a lame duck, show the a little support and compassion, they are trying their best. If YOU are the lame duck, enjoy your last couple of days at work and give it your all.

So whether you are the duck or not, try and make today a good day.

National Weatherman’s Day

Today is an occupational themed holiday but the person of with this job at my home isn’t always right.

Today is National Weatherman Day. This day was made in 1744 to commemorate John Jeffries birthday, America’s first weatherman. Now this day is to show appreciation towards weathermen and weatherwomen who report the weather to us and warn us of any dangerous weather that might be headed our way whether it’s rain or a tornado or what-have-you. Yes, there are “weatherpeople” who get the weather wrong at times but mother nature doesn’t always play fair in the “Guess what I’m gonna do next” game.

So when you watch the news today, be happy that you at least have a weatherman or weatherwoman who tries to do a good job and have a good day.

Create a Vacuum Day and Thank a Mailman Day

Howdy everyone (yes, I said “howdy” I like saying it occasionally), today is another two-for-1 holiday with one kind of…weird and nonsensical and the other about appreciating someone whom we all might have taken for granted that plays an important role in our life.

Today is Create a Vacuum Day…now I don’t know what in the world this day is supposed to be about or even why it’s called this…there were theories about thinking up a holiday that has to do with vacuums or vacuuming, actually creating a working vacuum, or wanting theoretically making a vacuum to suck up a person’s troubles and worries. Now while the creating a vacuum sounds kind of cool, I would suggest doing whichever one of these theories that you think fits best with how you perceive it or whatever you like. Just have fun with it.

The other holiday today is Thank a Mailman Day. That’s right, go outside, wait for your mailman and when they get to your mailbox, thank them. These people bring us important (and some not so important) documents and packages that can change our lives and go out into harsh weather and dangerous situations sometimes just to bring you your mail. These guys deserve at least a thank you and acknowledgement for the work they do.

So be sure to show you appreciate your mailman (or mail person) and have a good day.

The Day the Music Died and National Wear Red Day

Today is a day that is more serious than most holidays: One to remember three musicians who died this day and the other to bring awareness to a common disease.

Firstly, today is called The Day the Music Died This refers to a plane crash in 1959 on this day that killed Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper. For those of you who don’t know who these guys are, they were basically the music idols long ago. It is always hard to have a musician or singer you grew up loving pass in a terrible way so those of you who were fans of these guys, this one is for you.

Secondly, today is also National Wear Red Day. This day is about spreading awareness towards women about heart disease. Heart disease is a very bad disease that can kill many people; it killed over 7.6 million people in 2005 according to a comment made by Edmund M. Hayes Ph.D. on medpedia.com. So make sure you wear something red today and learn more about the threat of heart disease, especially since many Americans like fatty, fast food and are becoming fatter themselves.

So bow your head in remembrance of the three singers who died this day, spread the awareness of heart disease and have a good day today.

Groundhog Day

Man the weather sure has been crazy lately; sunny one day, raining cats and dogs the next. I can’t wait for spring.

Thank goodness today is Groundhog Day. On this day, Phil the groundhog is supposed to come out of his hole and if he sees his shadow, more winter. But if he doesn’t see his shadow, sooner spring. This is not originally an American tradition but it is originally German. When German folk came to America, they brought over this tradition (as well as hamburgers and kindergarten.) I do hope Phil doesn’t see his shadow, I really want to go swimming again, along with seeing the flowers and crops grow.

One more thing, I decided to let the weather make a decision for me along with Phil. If it rains today, I will make cold, classic banana pudding like my boyfriend wants. If it’s sunny today, I will make warm, baked banana pudding like my cousin suggested. Since I can’t choose, the weather will be my guide.

So let’s cross our fingers and hope for spring and remember, have a nice day whether rain or shine.
